C.D. Singles Club #1 – Dexateens – Can You Whoop It?
In our dreams, Citizen Dick turns into a global enterprise. We have a secretarial pool, company cars, refrigerators full of Cristal and so on. The most important piece of that dream? Record label. We’d pump out sweet 7-inch singles, re-issue obscure, insanely cool records and, more or less, flood the market with vinyl that would make you drool. In essence, we want to be Bruce Pavitt and John Poneman circa 1986.
Sadly, we don’t really have the capacity to sign bands, none of us have business degrees and records are fucking expensive to make. There will be no mail-order Citizen Dick mail order Single of the Month Club. Thank god for the internet. Once a month or so, we’ll drop a track on you, call it a “single” and feel like we’re living the dream. If you don’t shatter the illusion for us, we’ll appreciate it.
The first entry in the Singles Club comes from David Berman’s (of Silver Jews) Dexateens, which appears to be the last music he recorded before retiring from the biz. The song, “Can You Whoop It,” is both hilarious and pointed, tounge-in-cheek and dead serious. The guitar solo at the end absolutely shreds. It’s a killer tune and one that we’re proud to launch the Singles Club with. The track comes from a full-length album, Singlewide, that drops on May 12. We’ve not yet heard the whole thing, but if the rest of it is half as good as this little nugget, it’s going to kick some ass. For the record, we like Ronnie Dio as well, but are lukewarm on creases in our jeans.
