do not fuck with bear bryant or his hat

When you read this, I will be in Mississippi with my college roommate Jon.  We will be preparing ourselves mentally and physically for the clash of two collegiate football titans, Ole Miss and Alabama.  Should Mississippi emerge victorious, look for me on ESPN; I’ll be the drunk riding the goalpost to the ground.  Jon and I graduated from Bowling Green State University (in Ohio, for those of you farther afield) and only had tentative brushes with serious collegiate athletics.  Bowling Green won the NCAA hockey title in 1984 (long before we attended) and the hockey program was a big draw during our tenure, although they lost more games than they won during our four years.  Antonio Daniels, future NBA lottery pick, was on the basketball team during our freshman year; the backup point guard (Howard, whom we loved dearly for his disdain of garbage time and his penchant for illicit substances) lived on my floor and brought Antonio over one night; he sat on my sofa and drank one of my MGDs, but they didn’t make the tournament that year (or in any year since).  All this to say that we’re stoked to see a real college football game.  (I saw about three quarters of Falcon football during my time there; at least two of them were because Jon was trying to score with a Miami cheerleader.)  We’re both rolling into middle age and it will be nice to relive our youth a touch on someone else’s campus.  (If I don’t have a post up next week, it is probably because I am in a Mississipian prison.  Wish me luck.)

I’m writing on a Tuesday, because I have to write and read for my classes on Wednesday and I have to pack on Thursday.  Mrs. Citizen also wants to get in some quality time before I head south of the Mason-Dixon line.  As such, I’m phoning this one in a bit.  (I thought the little sketch above was mildly entertaining, if totally unrelated to music.)  Only live tracks this week from artists that you already know I love.  The incomparable Mike Doughty is at the Beachland on October 13, so you get some vintage Soul Coughing. Because I’m traveling out of state you get “Flashlight.”  “Flashlight” makes me think of airplanes and places I’ve never been.  That makes sense, right?

Next week’s Lazy Saturday will be back to the full-on treatment you’ve come to expect.  Note its arrival on your day planner.
