We’ve written in the past about the cool things being done in Olympia, Washington by People in a Position to Know. They put out extremely limited edition records (often 7″ singles) from very cool bands (Wand, Golden Boots, Casper and the Cookies, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, Norfolk & Western…), focusing on quality over quantity, love over commerce. We’ve been stoked since May for a release PIAPTK have been promising since then, a 7″ single from Jescos, a James Toth fronted super-group featuring fellow Tennesians Tim Bracy and Bingham Barnes. We’re sure you’re aware of our James Toth complex here at Citizen Dick, so we’ve been itching to get our ears on this new material from a new act. There are (at least) two pieces of good news on the Jescos front:
1) PIAPTK is accepting pre-orders for the Jescos 7″. It is five bucks plus half that for shipping. As with the last PIAPTK record we chatted about, they’re making very few of them (500), it will be on colored vinyl (green or pink) and you will be able to sell it in thirty years to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for one billion dollars.
2) The PIAPTK people have a digital sampler with a whole slew of excellent stuff on it, including one of the songs on the Jescos single. Sign up for their mailing list and you’ll get the link for the download, which is an incredibly fair exchange. (You’ll also get their very occasional e-mails, alerting you to the opportunity for commerce. This is a good thing, as they only sell things that you would want.)
indent 2a) The Jescos song on the digital sampler is amazing. It’s a Bracy track and it drips with down home style and excellence. It’s about (ostensibly) John Cale’s replacement in the Velvet Underground and laced with all sorts of hip references to same. I downloaded the digital sampler an hour ago and have already listened to it half a dozen times.
indent 2b) The PIAPTK folks gave us the green light to share the track with you.
indent 2c) You get to listen to it below.
So. Beat a digital track to PIAPTK and thank us later. In addition to the Jescos thing, they’ve got some super cool stuff on the shelves, including a lathe cut book and record from Wand. (The video is going to make your jaw drop; the x-ray page thing blows my mind.) In the meantime, dig on “Doug Yule” from Jescos. I’m thinking I like it better than about 75% of the Wand songs I’ve heard. Kevin might disagree, but he’s a natural contratian.
